Statuen af Hans Christian Andersen er placeret i New York City’s Central Park. Ideen med statuen er skabt af baronesse Alma Dahlerup. Statuen af H.C. Andersen blev udført i bronze af billedhuggeren George Lober og blev indviet i 1955. Bænken H.C. Andersen sidder på er tegnet af arkitekt Otto F. Langmann og udført i rosafarvet poleret granit. Eventyrdigteren læser eventyret om “Den grimme ælling” for de børn der er omkring ham.
Teksten er : “The ugly Duckling / It was beautiful in the country. It was summer / The wheat fields were golden and the oats / green. Down among the green / meadows and the middle of the forests were / deep lakes. Yes it was indeed lovely out / there in the country. In the midst of / the sunshine there stood an old manor / house that had a deep moat around it. / From the walls of the manor right down to / the water edge ….”
